The Ultimate Autumn Garden Guide

With the soil still warm from summer and increased rainfall, autumn is the perfect time to plant to give your tree or shrub the best possible start. Discover our ultimate autumn garden guide to find out what to plant in your garden this autumn to enjoy joyful colour from now until Spring.

1. Add Vibrant Autumn Colours with Trees

Brighten your garden with trees that come alive in autumn, like the striking yellow tones of Gleditsia 'Sunburst' or the crimson reds of Red Maple 'Royal Red'. These trees offer more than just stunning autumn colour - throughout summer, 'Sunburst' features a fresh lime green hue, while 'Royal Red' displays rich, dark purple tones, keeping your garden vibrant year-round with minimal effort.

2. Introduce beautiful winter flowering plants

Your garden doesn't have to be bloomless throughout the winter months. Shrubs such as the evergreen 'Jacqueline Postill' provide year-round colour as well as delicate, fragrant blooms from January, while 'Beni-Chidori' stuns with its vivid pink flowers on bare branches from February. As well as adding brightness, these winter-flowering shrubs offer vital nutrients to early pollinators, giving them a helping hand during the cooler months.

3. Don't forget to plant your spring bulbs

Now is the perfect time to plant your spring bulbs. Brighten up the bare spots in your garden borders with stunning spring flowering varieties like vibrant tulips and cheerful yellow daffodils.

Planting tip: Use a trowel to dig holes for the bulbs, and plant them 2-3 times deeper than their height. Provide enough space in-between the bulbs, especially larger ones such as tulips. Sprinkle in some plant feed to give your bulbs the best start.
