Tree Tasks For Autumn

Autumn is the ideal time to plant new trees. Lower water requirements at this time of year, coupled with relatively warm soil, allows them to focus on root growth. By the time spring comes, the roots will already have started spreading into the surrounding ground. Before any winter winds arrive, check tree stakes and ties are firm. Gently loosen any ties that are digging into the trunk from a summer growth burst.Once the leaves have fallen, it is a good time to prune many deciduous tree species. This includes Rowan, Birch, Beech and Dogwood. Start by removing diseased and crossing branches, then look to prune to shape or size if desired. Pruning of Maples can be done at this time but is best kept to a minimum.Gooseberry and currant bushes benefit from thinning out of stems that have fruited. If trees have dropped a lot of leaves, clear these from paths, lawns and borders. Healthy leaves can go on the compost heap or under a hedge to provide shelter for wildlife during the winter months. For inspiration on trees to plant, browse these autumn favourites.
