1. Deadhead flowers to encourage growth

Deadhead Roses, Dahlias and other flowering perennials and bedding plants as and when they look faded or scruffy. This encourages more flowers or, for plants already finished flowering, it helps direct energy into stronger growth ready for next years display.

2. Plant your spring bulbs

September's arrival marks the start of bulb planting season, and our spring bulb shop is LIVE!
 
Daffodils, Crocus and Allium are best planted earlier in autumn., while Tulips can be left a little later. Top tip: Bulbs should be planted at about three times their depth.

3. It's time to harvest your apples

Due to the warmer weather earlier this year, apple picking season has arrived ahead of schedule, and some varieties might already be ripe! Ripe apples should come off the tree with little effort. If you're facing a large crop, why not check out an apple pie recipe.

4. Keep watering your plants

Spring and summer have been dry and this trend has continued into September. Make sure you continue to water your plants, especially ones that are new and still establishing. For watering tips, read our guide: How to Water Trees and Shrubs Correctly 

5. Place netting over ponds

For those gardeners with ponds, now's a good time to net them before the leaves start to fall in autumn - this will prevent too much debris from entering the water.

Before you go… here’s why autumn is already in the air 🍁

You might’ve noticed some trees are already starting to show their autumn colours. That’s because the hot weather earlier this year has caused them to react a bit sooner than usual. Even Kew Gardens has reported that their English Oaks are dropping leaves due to the tougher conditions.

What this means:
Some of our trees are just getting into autumn mode a little early. They're still healthy, so no need to worry if you see a few leaves turning already!
