New Bare Root Video Guides Now Live | Bare Root Planting Season

We’ve added two new bare root videos to our Tree 101 video series—perfect timing for bare root planting season.

A bare root tree is a tree that has been lifted out of the ground during its non-growing season and is supplied without a pot or soil. They can only be planted during their dormant season, which is between November and March.

Bare root trees will look a little sparse when you first receive (they are dormant after all) but, provided they are planted correctly, will establish quickly and grow into beautiful trees. Unlike containerised trees, bare root trees do not need to transition from container soil to local soil, and because they’re planted during dormancy, will focus all their energy into establishing their root systems underground.

2. How to Heel in a Bare Root Tree Before Planting (Storing Bare Root Trees)

How to Plant a Bare Root Tree shows Katie planting a lovely bare root Morello Cherry tree into the ground. The process is similar to planting containerised trees, plus a couple of other important considerations. Crucially, Katie explains how to avoid one of the main causes of failure in bare root trees—planting too deeply—in a quick and simple way. Watch now to make sure you’re giving your new bare root tree the best start in life.

How to Heel in a Bare Root Tree covers how to store your bare root tree prior to planting. If you’re not able to plant you bare root tree out straight away, it’s important to store it correctly to protect the roots from drying out. The best way of doing this is by temporarily planting your tree into some soft garden soil, either in the ground or in a large container. In the planting world, we call this “heeling in”. Katie shows us how best to do this in just a few simple steps.
