NEW Arrivals | Top Flowering Shrubs for Patios & Small Gardens in 2024

Trees are in our name, but here at Ornamental Trees we are also lovers of all things shrubs. That’s why we’re delighted to now stock a brand new range of beautiful, high-quality Azaleas, Camellias and Hibiscus. They’ll be joining our current shrub offerings of Rhododendron, Viburnum, and Hydrangeas, among several others.

Easy to grow and plant, shrubs can fulfil many roles, from providing year-round structure to incorporating bursts of colours into the garden. Shrubs aren’t just for borders, though. Many of our new Azaleas, Camellias and Hibiscus are well-suited to smaller gardens as well as container planting, so would make a beautiful addition to a patio in need of some colour.

Azaleas

Perfect for partially shaded to fully shaded patios (planted in containers), smaller gardens, and for filling gaps in mixed borders

Think Rhododendron, just smaller. Azaleas are some of the most popular flowering shrubs, featuring stunning trumpet-shaped flowers in a wide range of colours against glossy green foliage. All of our new Azalea shrubs are evergreens, so are ideal for year-round interest and structure. They’re also perfect for smaller gardens as they’ll reach an approx. height and spread of only 1 x 1 metres in 20 years. Just make sure you’re planting in acidic soil or ericaceous compost (if container planting).

Camellias

Perfect for shady patios (planted in containers) and smaller gardens. Plant as a stand-alone feature specimen or combine with other acid-loving plants such as Azalea, Hydrangea and Gardenia

A slightly larger option than Azaleas, Camellias are upright, compact shrubs that produce showy flowers which are often ruffled in their centres. Like Azaleas, Camellias produce glossy evergreen foliage, making them an ideal year-round foil for other plants as well. They prefer a moist but well-draining acidic soil and are another great option for patios when planted in a large enough container (as long as you use ericaceous compost). Many of our new Camellias are hardier than other varieties, including Camellia x williamsii 'Debbie', Camellia japonica 'Brushfields Yellow' and Camellia japonica 'Lady Campbell'.

Top tip: keep Camellias well-watered through the summer – this is when the plants produce next year’s flower buds. Use rainwater (which is more acidic than tap water) for the best results.

Hibiscus Flower Towers

Perfect for very small gardens, pots and patios, and colder climates

These fantastic Hibiscus plants are pretty much exactly as they sound. Available in three beautiful colours, Hibiscus Flower Towers will form a compact and narrow, upright shape (almost column-like) and are particularly well suited to pots and very small gardens. They’re very low-maintenance (no pruning required to retain their shapes) and are hardy down to -25C, so are ideal for more northern locations. The Purple variety is a particular favourite of ours—the edges of the petals are a pretty shade of lilac which darkens to a deep red/purple colour towards the centre.

We offer each of the below 3 varieties in both a narrow bush form and a top-grafted tree form.
