Why Choose A Family Fruit Tree?
A family fruit tree is a great choice for those with room for just one tree. The family fruit tree consists of 2 or more varieties of a fruit grafted onto one tree. Grafting has been practised for thousands of years and is a method of asexual plant propagation where the tissues of one plant are encouraged to fuse with those of another. The grafting technique is used to ensure that varieties are true to type. Living, viable material, called the scion, is removed from the variety you wish to propagate, (e.g. Bramley apple), and grafted onto the chosen rootstock to produce a new plant.Benefits of a family fruit tree
  • Space saving
  • Pollination partners are always present
  • Aesthetically pleasing
  • Fruit ripens at different points in the season
  • Culinary, dual purpose and dessert apples all on one tree

Our family apple trees will grow to approximately 3.5 meters in 20 years, family pears to approximately 4 meters in 20 years. Family fruit trees are available here in containerised form. There is often a choice of varieties. Our family fruit trees are available as apples or pears and each tree boasts 3 varieties. For those without the space for a family apple or pear tree there is another option providing more than one variety on a small tree. Dual cordon apple trees are grown with one variety grafted on top of another. These trees can be grown at an angle against wires or a fence, or upright and freestanding as a pillar tree. Unlike the family trees these dual cordons are grown on dwarfing rootstocks with all the benefits of a family fruit tree. With the correct pruning our dual cordon apple trees will grow to approximately 2 meters in 20 years with a very minimal spread.
