How should I choose which trees to buy?There are a few things to think about when choosing what sort of tree to buy. Listed below are some points to consider;
- Would you like an ornamental, garden tree for aesthetic purpose only or a productive fruit tree?
- Do you require a tree for a particular purpose e.g. screening trees, fast growing trees, shade giving trees, avenue trees?
- What space is available for your trees? Do you require a dwarf tree or is there room enough for a larger growing tree?
- How much time and attention are you able to give to pruning trees? Should you choose something low maintenance?
- What is the position like where you intend to plant your tree? E.g. sheltered, exposed, damp, polluted, dry
- If you are going to buy fruit trees you need to choose the right rootstock. For more on rootstocks see ‘Rootstocks explained’
Should I choose a pot grown or bare root tree?Bare root plants are dug from the fields in the late autumn to spring period, when the plants are dormant. They have no soil around the roots, and are dispatched in black plastic bags with damp straw, to protect the roots from desiccation and frost. These need to be planted within a few days of receipt.Pot grown plants have been growing in the pot for around 12 months. They retain all their root system and can be planted at any time of year. This growing method is also used for those plants that cannot be successfully transplanted as bare root, for example, evergreens. These can be planted whenever you are ready.Where can I buy trees?When considering where to buy trees and looking for a tree supplier it is highly advisable to choose a specialist tree nursery with highly trained staff, to ensure top quality in products and advice.
