One of the most popular flowering cherry trees, Prunus ‘Kanzan’ is renowned for its spectacular display of large, double pink flowers. Appearing between April and early May, the pink cherry blossom carries a subtle hint of purple and features delicately frilled edges.

The spring blossom is followed by bronze-coloured new leaves, which mature to a lush mid-green. In autumn, the leaves turn striking orange tones for a second seasonal display.

Prunus ‘Kanzan’, also known as Prunus ‘Sekiyama’, is a Japanese flowering cherry tree. It grows into a medium-sized ornamental tree with a slowly spreading habit and reaches approximately 6 x 4 metres (height x spread) in 20 years.

Easy to grow in a sunny position, Prunus ‘Kanzan’ tolerates polluted environments and soils ranging from acidic to alkaline. Avoid planting it in a site prone to very wet conditions or shallow, chalky soils.

This pink flowering Japanese cherry tree is equally impressive when planted as a line of avenue trees or grown as a standalone specimen tree in a garden. Combining spectacular double pink cherry blossom and attractive seasonal foliage, this award-winning choice is one of the finest and most reliable flowering cherry trees for UK gardens.

Planting Steps

Aftercare Advice

Flowering Cherry trees require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

It is beneficial to carry out formative pruning for the first few years by creating a balanced branch framework and removing badly placed shoots. After two to three years, you will only need to remove any damaged or unwanted branches. On top grafted forms, very occasionally the grafted stem may produce shoots and these should be pruned back. The best time of year to prune Cherry Blossom trees is straight after flowering.
