Description

Prunus cerasifera 'Pissardii' displays dark-purple leaves on blackish stems, against which the pale pink flowers that appear in spring are a beautiful contrast. The flowers often fade to white and can be followed by plum like ornamental fruits (not edible to humans) in the autumn, so extending the period of interest. The foliage also makes an excellent foil to other plants.

With a rounded habit, the height and spread of this ornamental Purple Leaved Plum tree after 20 years is about 5 x 4 metres, making it suitable for small gardens. Prunus cerasifera 'Pissardii' is low maintenance, requiring little in the way of pruning and can tolerate a range of positions. It does well in a reasonably fertile soil in sun or partial shade, but it’s best to avoid very wet conditions.

Planting Steps

Aftercare Advice

Flowering Cherry trees require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

It is beneficial to carry out formative pruning for the first few years by creating a balanced branch framework and removing badly placed shoots. After two to three years, you will only need to remove any damaged or unwanted branches. On top grafted forms, very occasionally the grafted stem may produce shoots and these should be pruned back. The best time of year to prune Cherry Blossom trees is straight after flowering.
