Description

Malus 'Madonna' (Mazam) is a small flowering Crab Apple tree with an upright and compact habit, typically growing to a height of 3.5m and a spread of 2.5m. It is renowned for its stunning and fragrant spring display of large, double white flowers that resemble white roses. These blossoms are followed by ornamental small brown/orange and red crabapple fruits, which serve as a food source for wildlife. The tree's foliage emerges with a red/bronze hue, maturing to green in summer, and then transitions to vibrant autumnal shades of orange and yellow before falling. Malus Madonna (Mazam) thrives in full sun to partial shade in moist but well-drained soils.

Aftercare Advice

Crab Apple trees require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

You can harvest culinary Crab Apples in early autumn or leave them for birds to enjoy. The trees should be pruned in winter but do not require hard pruning. Avoid trimming the tips of branches. Simply remove any dead or damaged branches and shoots at the base of the tree i.e. suckers and water sprouts.
