Description
Hamamelis x intermedia 'Jelena' is one of the very best Witch Hazels, renowned for its abundance of orange winter flowers and worthy of its RHS Award of Garden Merit. It's a glorious display and the flowers also release a subtle citrusy perfume.
Earlier in the year, the large green leaves of Hamamelis x intermedia 'Jelena' transform to stunning shades of orange and red for a fabulous autumn display. Once the leaves have fallen, you are left with a beautiful architectural wide vase form on which the profusion of orange flowers are borne in January – February.
Expect a height and spread of 4 x 4 metres in 20 years from this Orange Witch Hazel shrub. Hamamelis 'Jelena' will tolerate some exposure and should be planted in full sun or partial shade. A well drained to moist but well drained soil with an acidic-neutral pH is preferred. Hamamelis are also great value to wildlife. 'Jelena' was named in the 1950's by plant breeder Robert de Belder for his wife.
