Description

This small, bushy shrub is a unique variety of Smoke Bush, growing circular leaves that are golden-yellow in colour, as opposed to the usual purple normally associated with Cotinus. Smoke Bushes are so-called because of fluffy flower plumes that cover the plant in midsummer, giving the impression of soft, billowing smoke, and Cotinus 'Golden Spirit' is no different. This Smoke Bush is an excellent choice for autumn colour when its foliage takes on vibrant tones of pink, red and orange. Its leaves, when young, are tinged with tones of pink and red. Hardy with a rounded habit, Cotinus 'Golden Spirit' has won the RHS Award of Garden Merit so you can expect this variety to perform reliably in the garden.

Reaching an approximate height and spread of 2.5 x 2.5 metres in 20 years, Cotinus 'Golden Spirit' would make a striking addition to a shrub border, or alone as a specimen plant. Its foliage can even be cut and incorporated into flower arrangements. Plant in a moist well-draining soil in full or partial sun.

AKA Cotinus 'Golden Spirit', Smoke Bush, Cotinus coggygria Ancot

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
