Description

Cornus sanguinea 'Winter Beauty' is a deciduous shrub with a year round display of colour. In the spring, it displays rich, oval green leaves which turn a lovely yellow and orange in autumn. This is complemented by the shrub's main feature: its yellow and red stems, which create a fiery display in winter, bringing some much-needed bright colour to the garden in the duller season. This shrub has also been designated Plants for Pollinators, as it produces clusters of small, white flowers which attract bees.

'Winter beauty' thrives in full sun or partial shade within an exposed or sheltered environment. It prefers moist but well-drained soils and has an ultimate height and spread of 2.5 meters.

Aftercare Advice

Dogwood shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

Avoid pruning Dogwood shrubs in the first year. Each subsequent year we recommend pruning hard around February, so you benefit from enjoying the colourful stem for a little longer without any detrimental effect on spring growth. Follow pruning by mulching and fertilising to encourage new growth, as it is this new growth that displays the vivid colours.
