Description

Castanea sativa, commonly known as a Sweet Chestnut tree, is a handsome tree valued for its ornamental appeal, edible chestnuts and wildlife interest. It features large, glossy, deeply serrated foliage, which is accompanied by catkins in summer. These turn into edible chestnuts housed in spiny lime green casing and are popular for roasting or can be left for wildlife to enjoy.

Leaves turn bronze before falling in autumn, leaving behind the rounded form with twisted, ribbed, retiform bark that appears with age. The wood of Castanea sativa is high in tannin, making it virtually rot proof, so the tree is often used for coppicing which it responds well to.

A large rounded ornamental tree, Castanea sativa will grow to 10 x 6 meters in 20 years. It is often used in park lands or avenues and is worthy of a space in the larger garden. It can be grown in most conditions but prefers a lighter soil and will not tolerate heavy lime in a soil. T

AKA Sardian nut, European chestnut, Spanish chestnut, Common chestnut, Eurasian chestnut

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
