Description
Betula albosinensis 'Kansu' is a beautiful Chinese Red Birch tree with rich pink, orange and copper peeling bark. Underneath, the fresh bark is creamy white, creating a stunning contrast and providing year-round interest. Catkins in spring are followed by green leaves that create an airy canopy that creates dappled shade. A deciduous tree, the foliage turns soft yellow in autumn before falling.
Growing to 8 x 4 metres (height x spread) in 20 years, Betula albosinensis 'Kansu' makes a stunning garden or landscape specimen and received the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 2018. It is very hardy and will cope with exposure to the elements, damp sites and even drought. It grows well in loam, clay and sand and tolerates chalk soil.
