Himalayan Birch (Betula utilis) trees are known for their attractive white bark that looks wonderful in any garden. Because the bark is such a feature, we offer a number of both single stem and true multi stem forms. These white barked trees look spectacular where they catch the light to show off their striking bark to its best.
With the popularity of Himalayan Birch trees increasing, there are a number of varieties to choose from. Betula utilis jacquemontii is considered a classic, but if space is a concern then the smaller size of ‘Snow Queen’, ‘Moonbeam’, ‘Trinity College’. ‘Fastigiata’ and ‘Fastigiata Joes’ make them good choices. For more unusual bark, ‘Fascination’ has pale peeling bark with hints of orange, brown and pink instead of pure white.
Himalayan Birch trees are easy to grow, requiring similar conditions and care to most other Birch trees. Establish a good watering regime for newly planted trees and keep in mind that Birch trees prefer damp soil over dry soil. Occasionally, you may wish to gently wash the beautiful white bark with cool water to keep it looking bright.
Single stem trees will require a stake to anchor the roots, whilst multi-stem forms do not. If a clear trunk is desired on single stem forms, you can remove the lateral shoots low down but it is not recommended to hard prune Himalayan Birch trees.
