Liriodendron Trees | Tulip Trees

Liriodendron trees are also referred to as Tulip trees, because of the tulip shaped yellow flowers that adorn mature trees in summer. Liriodendron have uniquely shaped four lobed, attractive leaves that turn a beautiful true yellow colour in autumn.  As well as the classic Liriodendron tulipifera tree, we offer upright and variegated varieties.

Choosing & Growing Liriodendron Tulip Trees

Liriodendron are a genus within the Magnolia family and have large tulip shaped flowers. The flowers have six petals plus three sepals on the outside and the easily visible stamens are laid out in a spiral shape that add to their beauty. The seeds are formed on a fruit that is reminiscent of a cone.

These features, coupled with the beautifully distinctive leaves, make Tulip trees a good choice in medium to larger sized gardens. When space is a concern, opt for the more slender Liriodendron tulipifera ‘Fastigiata’ or the less prolific Liriodendron tulipifera ‘Aureomarginata’. Liriodendron tulipera are native to North America and grow well in sun, partial shade and windy situations.
