How to Measure Trees

Smaller trees are measured in terms of their current height, typically up to 250cm, whilst mature trees are measured by their girth. Any pot sizes given are an approximation and may vary slightly. All trees listed on the website are also given an estimated height and spread in 20 years’ time, but a happy and healthy tree will continue to grow for years afterwards.

Measuring Smaller Trees, Multi-stem Trees and Clumps

Using a tape measure, measure the height from the bottom of the stem where it meets the soil, up to the highest point of the tree.

Measuring Top-Grafted and Lollipop Trees

Overall height is measured as above. A height next to this form (e.g. TG@45cm) refers to the length of clear stem. This is measured from the bottom of the stem where it meets the soil, up to the graft or lowest branches of the crown.

Measuring Mature Standard Trees

Mature trees are measured by their girth, which is the circumference of the stem taken 1 metre up from the soil level. Any heights stated in mature specifications are approximate.
