Description

Sorbus alnifolia 'Red Bird' is a fantastic slender tree providing plenty of interest and benefits to wildlife in several seasons. In late spring to early summer, flat-topped clusters of pretty white flowers decorate the tree and are a source of food for pollinators. Colourful orange-red, oval berries follow and are devoured by birds. Deeply veined green leaves turn vibrant oranges and reds providing further autumn interest.

Sorbus alnifolia 'Red Bird' will grow to around 6 metres in height and 3.5 metres spread over 20 years. A hardy Mountain Ash tree, 'Red Bird' can cope with exposure to the elements. Best planted in full sun or partial shade in soil with good drainage. Originating from China and Korea, this Rowan is a fantastic feature-packed tree for the garden.

Planting Steps

Aftercare Advice

Rowan require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

Rowan trees require a strong framework to support their many berries, so it is good to encourage this by raising the crown in summer. Simply prune the lower branches and any crossing, damaged or diseased branches within the crown. Hard pruning can be carried out in the dormant season, from autumn to winter.
