Description
Crataegus monogyna, known as Common Hawthorn, is a popular native hedging choice, with seasonal interest, ample wildlife benefits and thorns that deter intruders. It is also exceptionally hardy, tolerating extremely cold winters, coastal or exposed sites, air pollution and damp.
Common Hawthorn hedging has glossy, dark green, deeply lobed leaves that provide an attractive backdrop to fragrant, single white flowers in May. The flowers provide nectar for pollinators and are followed by small, dark red haws, which provide a valuable food source for birds. Leaves turn yellow and bronze in the autumn before falling, leaving the thorny branches that provide a safe nesting place for birds.
Particularly suited to naturalistic and wildlife-focused gardens or rural settings, Hawthorn hedges can be maintained between 1.5 and 3 metres in height.
