Description

This small flowering Japanese Apricot tree is very compact and features fragrant, white, semi-double flowers that are sometimes flushed with hints of pink. Literally translated as 'Memories of Mother', Prunus mume 'Omoi-no-mama' produces its beautifully almond-scented blossom in February and March. The foliage is small, mid-green and slightly glossy, developing warm yellow and orange tones in autumn.

Naturally compact,  ‘Omoi-no-mama’ has a neat, slightly lollipop-shaped form, with a clear stem supporting a dense, bushy crown. After around 20 years it is expected to reach approximately 2.5 metres in both height and spread, making it well suited to container growing. It performs well in most soils, provided they are not excessively wet or chalky.

Prunus mume ‘Omoi-no-mama’ makes a striking feature tree for gardens of all sizes. A pink-flowering form of Flowering Japanese Apricot is also available, Prunus mume Beni Childori.

Aftercare Advice

Flowering Cherry trees require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

It is beneficial to carry out formative pruning for the first few years by creating a balanced branch framework and removing badly placed shoots. After two to three years, you will only need to remove any damaged or unwanted branches. On top grafted forms, very occasionally the grafted stem may produce shoots and these should be pruned back. The best time of year to prune Cherry Blossom trees is straight after flowering.
