Description
Common Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a tough native hedge with deeply ribbed, mid-green leaves that turn yellow in autumn. It is valued for its dense screening and ability to retain the (now copper-brown) leaves through winter. It also produces green catkins from late spring, followed by clusters of winged fruit.
Common Hornbeam hedging is excellent for wildlife, providing both shelter and food. It suits a wide-range of garden styles, from cottage to contemporary and will happily grow in a shaded or damp position. It is exceptionally hardy, coping with extremely cold winters or windy exposed sites. Hornbeam hedging is very similar to Beech - the main differences are that the leaves have deeper veins and the planting conditions can be slightly damper.
