Description

Fagus sylvatica 'Atropunicea' creates a stunning purple Beech hedge with dense screening and seasonal interest throughout the year. In spring, rich purple new leaves emerge and, in a sunny position they hold their colour well through summer. In lower light they can fade to green. In autumn, leaves turn red-brown and often remain on the branches through winter until new growth appears.

Purple Beech hedging is excellent for adding colour and contrast to green planting, suiting both modern and traditional gardens. It grows well in most conditions and does especially well in lime, alkaline soils. Once established, it is well suited to windy or exposed sites, but should not be planted in waterlogged or consistently wet ground.

Botanical name: Fagus sylvatica Atropurpurea
Also known as: Copper Beech hedge

Planting Steps

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
