Viburnum x carlcephalum Shrub

Flowering Viburnum Shrubs

from From £39.99 (ex. VAT)
( £47.99 (ex. VAT) inc. VAT)

A wonderful Viburnum shrub, perfect for small gardens, Viburnum x Carlcephalum has a bushy, open growth habit. Popular for its heavily scented globes of snow white flowers in summer that open from pink buds. The flowers are gently flushed with pink and arrive slightly later than some other Viburnum. This variety starts with a vase like shape but matures into the full, round form that makes Viburnum shrubs perfect for screening purposes.

Fragrant Snowball is often planted near paths and patios so the aroma can be enjoyed by passersby. Not only does Viburnum Carlcephalum boast colourful spring buds and scented summer flowers, it also produces red autumn berries before the leaves turn reddy purple, displaying vibrant autumn colour. Fragrant Snowball Viburnum reaches a final height and spread of approximately 2 x 2 metres and is best planted in a moist yet well-drained site in full sun or partial shade.

Delivery Timescales

All trees are carefully packed by our experienced team. Most deliveries are made within a week of placing the order, with many being despatched to our tried and tested couriers within 24 hours. To be on the safe side allow up to 10 working days for despatch. These trees are sent on a 'no signature required' basis, so there's no need to be in to receive your delivery. You can give instructions on where to leave it via the checkout or send us an email (sales@ornamental-trees.co.uk).

There is a slightly longer timescale on pleached and mature trees (trees over 2.5m in height) because we group orders together by geographic area for specialist delivery - we will contact these customers to notify them of the delivery date and whether the delivery driver needs help unloading the trees.

Gift trees and other trees required for arrival on a specific date can be accommodated with pleasure at no extra charge, although we accept no legal responsibility for late deliveries.

Our nursery is a busy despatch centre and therefore customers need to make an appointment to collect or view trees.  For collections, despatch charges will be refunded.

Planting Advice for Viburnum Carlcephalum trees

When planting Fragrant Snowball trees, such as the Viburnum Carlcephalum, it is important to prepare the planting area well. Pot grown viburnum trees can be planted at any time of the year. You will need to carry out the following to prepare your planting site.

Firstly, remove all weeds and grass within a metre of your desired planting hole then dig a hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide. We recommend digging a square hole as this encourages the roots to grow straight as opposed to around inside the hole. To help your tree establish more effectively, we advise applying root grow (sprinkle in the hole for pot grown trees), especially if you have poor soil.

Before planting your lilac tree, soak the roots in tepid water for 10-15 minutes, then gently tease the roots. If you have poor soil mix 50% of your original soil with 50% high quality compost. Fill in the hole and firm around gently. Make sure not to bank the soil up around the collar of the tree as this can cause problems. To see how to use a tree stake and tie, watch our informational how to videos.

Aftercare Advice for Fragrant Snowball trees

If you’re planting in dry weather, water well and regularly for the first few months. The same goes for spring and summer planting. Make sure to keep an eye on your young tree and increase watering if there are extended periods of hot or dry weather. If you’re planting in autumn, you may only need to water your tree a little. We also stock a range of irrigation kits, suitable for a variety of planting schemes.

Once planted, it is important to keep the area free of competing weeds for the first couple of growing seasons. Using a glyphosate based weed killer or installing mulch matting and bark chips will aid in this. Do not simply mow the grass surrounding your tree as this will only encourage growth. If you know your area is prone to rabbits, we would advise using a rabbit guard.

Pruning Advice for Viburnum Carlcephalum trees

Simply prune your Viburnum tree after flowering but avoid pruning any new shoot growth if your area is prone to frost.

Mature viburnum trees can be thinned out to improve their shape. Cut back any crossing, damaged or crowded branches.
