Sorbus commixta 'Embley' Tree

Scarlet Japanese Rowan Trees

from From £49.99 (ex. VAT)
( £59.99 (ex. VAT) inc. VAT)

This gorgeous small garden tree produces attractive fluffy corymbs of white flowers in May-June which are popular with the birds. The autumn colour is quite astounding in vibrant scarlet red. The berries that appear in the autumn are more orange than the straight forward Commixta and are very popular with birds.

The tree itself is neater in form and slightly smaller than Commixta. Scarlet Japanese Rowan is a very tough Rowan tree, suited to many conditions including exposed sites although it does prefer a position with slightly acidic soil. A small ornamental tree that is ideal when there is only room for one variety. Expect a height and spread of 6 x 4 meters in 20 years.

Planting Advice for Sorbus commixta 'Embley' Trees

Pot grown Sorbus commixta 'Embley' can be planted at any time of the year. Note that slightly acidic soil is preferable.

Remove all weeds and grass within a metre of your desired planting hole then dig a hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide. To help your tree establish more effectively, we advise applying root grow, especially if you have poor soil. Using 50% of the original soil and 50% compost, fill in the hole and firm around gently. Make sure not to bank the soil up around the collar of the tree as this can cause problems.

We recommend keeping trees well anchored using a stake and if you know your area is prone to rabbits, we would advise using a rabbit guard. All are available from our planting essentials section.

For more detailed step by step instructions and videos, see our Guide To Planting Containerised Or Rootballed Trees or our Guide To Planting Bare Rooted Trees.

Aftercare Advice For Sorbus commixta 'Embley' Trees

If planting Sorbus 'Embley' in spring or summer, water well and regularly for the first few months. Increase watering if there are extended periods of hot or dry weather. If you’re planting in autumn, you may only need to water your tree a little.

Once planted, it is important to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first couple of growing seasons. Using a glyphosate based weed killer or installing mulch matting and bark chips will aid in this. Do not simply mow the grass around the area as this will only encourage it to grow more vigorously.

Pruning Advice For Sorbus commixta 'Embley' Trees

Sorbus commixta 'Embley' trees require a strong framework to support their beautiful berries so it is good to encourage this by raising the crown in summer. Simply prune the lower branches and any crossing, damaged or diseased branches within the crown. Hard pruning can be carried out in the dormant season, from autumn to winter.
