Prunus 'Amanogawa' Tree

Japanese Flowering Cherry Trees

from From £49.99 (ex. VAT)
( £59.99 (ex. VAT) inc. VAT)

Prunus 'Amanogawa' is a narrow, columnar ornamental tree, perfect for smaller spaces as it will grow to a height and spread of just 6 x 2 metres in 20 years. In April, the upright branches are smothered in large, semi-double, pale pink flowers that disappear in the autumn. Bronze-green spring foliage turns to mid-green in the summer and then bursts into orange and red autumn colours later in the year.

Prunus 'Amanogawa' is ideal for urban areas as it is tolerant of pollution. A wonderful tree for lining avenues or for planting as an eye-catching specimen, this Japanese flowering cherry tree will do well in all but wet soils or shallow chalk.

Please note: Sunday 17th December is the last order date for Christmas delivery (excludes pleached and mature trees which have an earlier deadline).

Delivery Timescales

All trees are carefully packed by our experienced team. Most deliveries are made within a week of placing the order, with many being despatched to our tried and tested couriers within 24 hours. To be on the safe side allow up to 10 working days for despatch. These trees are sent on a 'no signature required' basis, so there's no need to be in to receive your delivery. You can give instructions on where to leave it via the checkout or send us an email (sales@ornamental-trees.co.uk).

There is a slightly longer timescale on pleached and mature trees (trees over 2.5m in height) because we group orders together by geographic area for specialist delivery - we will contact these customers to notify them of the delivery date and whether the delivery driver needs help unloading the trees.

Gift trees and other trees required for arrival on a specific date can be accommodated with pleasure at no extra charge, although we accept no legal responsibility for late deliveries.

Our nursery is a busy despatch centre and therefore customers need to make an appointment to collect or view trees.  For collections, despatch charges will be refunded.

Planting Advice For Prunus 'Amanogawa' Trees

Pot grown Japanese Flowering Cherry trees can be planted at any time of the year. To prepare the site, remove all weeds and grass within a metre of your desired planting hole. Dig a hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 1.5 sizes wide. We recommend digging a square hole as this encourages the roots to grow straight as opposed to around inside the hole. To help your tree establish more effectively, we advise applying root grow (sprinkle in the hole for pot grown trees), especially if you have poor soil. Gently loosen the roots and place into the planting hole.

Using 50% of the original soil and 50% compost, fill in the hole and firm around gently. Make sure not to bank the soil up around the collar of the tree as this can cause problems. We recommend using a stake and tie when planting to ensure your roots are well anchored. If you know your area is prone to rabbits, we would also advise using a rabbit guard.

The tree planting guide has more detailed information, as well as videos on planting trees and using stakes and ties.

After Care Advice For Prunus 'Amanogawa' Trees

If you’re planting in spring or summer, water well and regularly for the first few months. If you’re planting in autumn, you may only need to water your tree a little. It is important to keep an eye on young trees and increase watering if there are extended periods of hot or dry weather.

Once planted, it is important to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first 3 years. Using a glyphosate based weed killer or installing mulch matting and bark chips will aid in this. Do not simply mow the grass around the area as this will only encourage it to grow more vigorously.

Pruning Advice For Prunus 'Amanogawa' Trees

Although it is possible to simply leave your Japanese Flowering Cherry tree to its own devices, it can be encouraged by gentle pruning. If you prune your tree for the first few years it will create a more balanced branch framework. Prune after flowering i.e. after the petals have dropped but before the new shoot growth appears.

After two to three years, you will only need to remove any damaged or unwanted branches. However, the formative pruning that you have already carried out will have led to a healthier tree, less likely to need this.
