Description

Magnolia 'Watermelon' is a small deciduous tree with an upright habit, typically reaching a height of up to 8 metres and a spread of 4 metres. It features oval-shaped, mid-green leaves that provide a beautiful contrast to the striking bright pink double flowers produced in mid-spring. Occasionally, this magnolia will flower again in summer. Magnolia 'Watermelon' thrives in moist but well-drained soil and prefers a position in full sun to partial shade.

Planting Steps

Aftercare Advice

Magnolia require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.

Magnolia trees and shrubs can be pruned into shape by removing branches that are growing in an awkward position, as well as any that are damaged. They should not be heavily pruned as this can send them into shock. If pruning to limit the overall size, stagger your pruning over a few years to alleviate the stress on your tree. Pruning for Magnolia should be carried out in mid-summer to early autumn. Avoid pruning in late winter to early spring.
