Monkey Puzzle Tree

Araucaria araucana

from From £44.99 (ex. VAT)
( £53.99 (ex. VAT) inc. VAT)

The Monkey Puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana) is a lovely, almost symmetrical looking tree with very sharply pointed, leathery leaves (don't try touching this tree without tough gloves on - we speak from experience!). Extremely hardy and tolerant of even exposed coastal positions this tree will do well in any well drained soil in sun or part shade. This unique evergreen tree was given its common name ‘Monkey-puzzle’ when it was suggested that it would puzzle a monkey to climb it.

Araucaria araucana is very slow growing and will reach just 6 x 4 metres in 20 years creating a pyramidal shape. Due to its eventual size, Monkey Puzzle trees are best suited to larger gardens as a specimen tree.

There's a lot to say about this variety of tree - here are a selection of interesting facts

- female cones release edible nut like seeds (like large pine nuts) and is a food crop in Chile, although trees do not produce nut crops until mature (maybe 30 years old so don't hold your breath!)

- Originating in central/southern Chile and western Argentina, this tree is also sometimes known as Chilean Pine (originally named Pinus araucana named after the native Chileans who used the nuts as a main component of their diet)

- the leaves are so long lasting that sometimes the same leaf is held on the tree for 10 years or more

Delivery Timescales

All trees are carefully packed by our experienced team. Most deliveries are made within a week of placing the order, with many being despatched to our tried and tested couriers within 24 hours. To be on the safe side allow up to 10 working days for despatch. These trees are sent on a 'no signature required' basis, so there's no need to be in to receive your delivery. You can give instructions on where to leave it via the checkout or send us an email (sales@ornamental-trees.co.uk).

There is a slightly longer timescale on pleached and mature trees (trees over 2.5m in height) because we group orders together by geographic area for specialist delivery - we will contact these customers to notify them of the delivery date and whether the delivery driver needs help unloading the trees.

Gift trees and other trees required for arrival on a specific date can be accommodated with pleasure at no extra charge, although we accept no legal responsibility for late deliveries.

Our nursery is a busy despatch centre and therefore customers need to make an appointment to collect or view trees.  For collections, despatch charges will be refunded.

Planting Advice for Araucaria Araucana trees

When planting Monkey Puzzle trees, such as Araucaria Araucana, it is important to prepare the planting area well. Pot grown trees can be planted at any time of the year.

Firstly, remove all weeds and grass within a metre of your desired planting hole then dig a hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide. We recommend digging a square hole as this encourages the roots to grow straight as opposed to around inside the hole. To help your tree establish more effectively, we advise applying root grow (sprinkle in the hole for pot grown trees), especially if you have poor soil. Gently loosen the roots and place into the planting hole.

If your soil is poor, mix 50% of the original soil with 50% high quality compost, fill in the hole and firm around gently. Make sure not to bank the soil up around the collar of the tree as this can cause problems.

We advise planting young trees with a stake and tie kit. To see how to use a tree stake and tie, watch our informational how to videos.

Aftercare Advice for Monkey Puzzle trees

If you’re planting in dry weather, water well and regularly for the first few months. The same goes for spring and summer planting. Make sure to keep an eye on your young tree and increase watering if there are extended periods of hot or dry weather. If you’re planting in autumn, you may only need to water your tree a little. We also stock a range of irrigation kits, suitable for a variety of planting schemes.

Once planted, it is important to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first couple of growing seasons. Using a glyphosate based weed killer or installing mulch matting and bark chips will aid in this. Do not simply mow the grass around the area as this will only encourage it to grow more vigorously. If you know your area is prone to rabbits, we would advise using a rabbit guard.

Pruning Advice for Araucaria Araucana trees

Chilean Pine trees do not require a lot of pruning. Simply remove any dead, diseased or awkwardly placed branches from your Araucaria Araucana tree as and when you see them.
