Crataegus pinnatifida var major 'Big Golden Star' Tree

Chinese Hawthorn Trees

from From £49.99 (ex. VAT)
( £59.99 (ex. VAT) inc. VAT)

Although known as Big Golden Star, the star feature of this tree is actually its glossy, edible, red haws (not golden at all) which are a similar size to crab apples and slightly pear shaped. Crataegus Pinnatifida var Major, originating from China, is one of the best fruiting Hawthorn trees as, when the fruits are left on the branches, they remain well into the colder months, giving good aesthetic interest to the winter garden.

This Chinese Hawthorn is almost thornless, with large, dark-green leaves, turning a deep crimson colour in autumn. Crataegus Pinnatifida var major has the usual Hawthorn-type white flower clusters appearing in May. The tree is a modest size in maturity, reaching a height and spread of 4 x 3 metres in 20 years, making it suitable for small gardens. It prefers sun or partial shade and any well drained soil.

Planting Advice for Crataegus Pinnatifida var Major trees

When planting Chinese hawthorn trees, such as the Crataegus Pinnatifida var Major tree, it is important to prepare the planting area well. Pot grown Crataegus trees can be planted at any time of the year. You will need to carry out the following to prepare your planting site.

Firstly, remove all weeds and grass within a metre of your desired planting hole then dig a hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide. We recommend digging a square hole as this encourages the roots to grow straight as opposed to around inside the hole. To help your tree establish more effectively, we advise applying root grow (sprinkle in the hole for pot grown trees), especially if you have poor soil.

If you have poor soil mix 50% of your original soil with 50% high quality compost. Fill in the hole and firm around gently. Make sure not to bank the soil up around the collar of the tree as this can cause problems. When planting Norway maple trees, you should use ericaceous compost when possible as this encourages vibrant foliage colour. To see how to use a tree stake and tie, watch our informational how to videos.

Aftercare Advice for Big Golden Star Hawthorn trees

If you’re planting in dry weather, water well and regularly for the first few months. The same goes for spring and summer planting. Make sure to keep an eye on your young tree and increase watering if there are extended periods of hot or dry weather. If you’re planting in autumn, you may only need to water your tree a little. We also stock a range of irrigation kits, suitable for a variety of planting schemes.

Once planted, it is important to keep the area free of competing weeds for the first couple of growing seasons. Using a glyphosate based weed killer or installing mulch matting and bark chips will aid in this. Do not simply mow the grass surrounding your tree as this will only encourage growth.
If you know your area is prone to rabbits, we would advise using a rabbit guard.

Pruning Advice for Crataegus Pinnatifida var Major trees

You can prune your Chinese hawthorn tree in summer, after flowering, to help maintain a clear stem. By pruning the lower branches you will raise the crown, creating a more attractive form. If your crataegus tree requires any tidying up, this can be done in autumn. Remove and damaged or crossing branches and ensure there is enough light reaches the inner canopy.
