Crab apples are wonderfully varied, from the little gem-like fruits of Malus brevipes ‘Wedding Bouquet’ (above, far left) to the large culinary crab apples of Malus ‘Rosehip’ with their pronounced calyx (above, far right). Many trees are awash with stunning autumn colours on their foliage, but which are the best? For very small gardens, Japanese Maples are fantastic. There is a huge choice in spring, summer and autumn foliage colours. Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Garnet’ and Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’ are firm favourites for their bright scarlet autumn foliage.
