Multistem Himalayan Birch Trees

from From £59.99 (ex. VAT)
Was: £69.99 (ex. VAT)
( £71.99 (ex. VAT) inc. VAT)

This is a wonderful multi stem version of Betula utilis jacquemontii 'Snow Queen', with a beautiful form that displays the pure white, peeling bark to best effect all year round. Mustard tinted catkins hang from the branches in spring and silky green foliage turns creamy yellow in the autumn, completing the year round interest offered by 'Snow Queen'.

It is rightly our top selling multi stem Birch, favoured for the snow white bark developing earlier than other white stemmed Birches and the less vigourous nature making it suited to smaller gardens. Growing to 6 x 5 metres in 20 years, this robust multi stem Himalayan Birch will tolerate virtually all soils and conditions. We also offer a single stem 'Snow Queen'.

N.B. These are true multi stem trees that lead to the best trees in maturity. We do not adhere to putting 3 saplings in a pot to cheaply imitate them.

Delivery Timescales

Most deliveries are made within a week of placing the order. All trees are carefully packed by our experienced team, with many despatched to our tried and tested couriers within 24 hours (please allow up to 10 days). These trees are sent on a 'no signature required' basis, so there's no need to be in. You can give instructions on where to leave them via the checkout or email us (sales@ornamental-trees.co.uk).

There is a slightly longer timescale on pleached and mature trees (trees over 2.5m in height) because we group orders together by geographic area for specialist delivery - we will contact these customers to notify them of the delivery date and whether the delivery driver needs help unloading the trees.

Gift trees and those required for arrival by a specific date can be accommodated with pleasure, although we accept no legal responsibility for late deliveries.

Our nursery is a busy despatch centre, so please make an appointment to collect or view trees.  For collections, despatch charges will be refunded.

Planting Advice for Betula 'Snow Queen' Multi Stem Trees

Our pot grown multi stem Birch trees can be planted at any time of the year. To prepare your planting site, remove all weeds and grass within a metre of your desired planting hole then dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 1.5x as wide. To help your tree establish more effectively, we advise applying root grow (sprinkle in the hole for pot grown trees), especially if you have poor soil. Gently loosen the roots and place into the planting hole.

Using 50% of the original soil and 50% compost, fill in the hole and firm around gently. Make sure not to bank the soil up around the collar of the tree as this can cause problems. For further advice, see our help and advice section.

Aftercare Advice for Betula 'Snow Queen' Multi Stem Trees

If you’re planting Birch trees in spring, summer or dry weather, water well and regularly for the first few months. Make sure to keep an eye on young Birch trees and increase watering if there are extended periods of hot or dry weather. If you’re planting in autumn, you may only need to water your tree a little. Unlike other species, Birch trees would rather be in wet soil than dry. We stock a range of irrigation kits to assist.

Once planted, it is important to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first couple of growing seasons. Using a glyphosate based weed killer or installing mulch matting and bark chips will aid in this.

One of the key features of many birch trees is the exfoliating white bark. To keep your tree looking its best you can wash the bark, using a pressure washer (on a gentle setting); garden hose or slightly soapy water.

Pruning Advice for Betula 'Snow Queen' Multi Stem Trees

Established Birch trees do not require pruning and they do not take well to hard pruning. Hard pruning leads to increased light penetration of the roots which in turn results in increased soil temperature and decreased moisture levels. Simply remove the lateral shoots to maintain a clear trunk and prune any diseased or damaged branches. Pruning should be carried out in late summer to mid-winter. Birch trees bleed heavily at all other times of the year, especially late winter.
