Acer palmatum dissectum 'Garnet' Tree

Japanese Maple Trees

from From £34.99 (ex. VAT)
( £41.99 (ex. VAT) inc. VAT)

The feathery, heavily dissected foliage of Acer palmatum 'Garnet' resembles the colour of a garnet stone throughout the spring and summer, holding its colour well. Autumn brings scarlet shades to the foliage in a striking display.

Acer palmatum dissectum 'Garnet' is ideal for small gardens, growing to just 2 x 3 metres in 20 years. 'Garnet' prefers slightly moist, well-drained acidic soil although lime can also be tolerated. This wonderful Japanese Maple tree is suited to a sheltered position in dappled shade where it will create a stunning focal point or backdrop.

This is a very popular variety of Japanese Maple tree so we have a range of sizes, grown either as a mound forming bush or with a clear stem, top grafted at either 90cm or 130cm. The larger specimens have been grown over many years into a lovely tiered shape and will create a stunning feature, whether planted in a garden or kept in a large container.

Planting Advice For Acer palmatum dissectum 'Garnet' Trees

Pot grown Japanese Maples can be planted at any time of the year. Firstly, remove all weeds and grass within a metre of your desired planting hole then dig a hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide. We recommend digging a square hole as this encourages the roots to grow straight as opposed to around inside the hole. To help your tree establish more effectively, we advise sprinkling root grow in the hole, especially if you have poor soil.

When planting Japanese Maples, use ericaceous compost when possible as this encourages vibrant foliage colour. Using 50% of the original soil and 50% compost, fill in the hole and firm around gently. Make sure not to bank the soil up around the collar of the tree as this can cause problems.

The tree planting guide has more detailed information, as well as videos on planting trees and using stakes and ties.

Watering & Aftercare Advice For Acer palmatum dissectum 'Garnet' Trees

If you’re planting in spring or summer, water well and regularly for the first few months. If you’re planting in autumn, you may only need to water your tree a little. It is important to keep an eye on young trees and increase watering if there are extended periods of hot or dry weather. If possible, use rain water instead of tap water as this is more acidic and better for foliage colour. We stock a range of irrigation kits for more effective watering.

Once planted, keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first couple of growing seasons. Using a glyphosate based weed killer or installing mulch matting and bark chips will aid in this. If there is snow fall, gently brush the snow from the branches to ensure it does not weigh down the framework and cause damage.

Pruning Advice For Acer palmatum dissectum 'Garnet' Trees

Pruning should be carried out in the dormant season (November to March) as Japanese Maples bleed during other times of the year, which can weaken the branches. Japanese Maples rarely need pruning as their natural shape is normally the most attractive. Any pruning should be carried out with a less is more approach, only removing crossing, damaged or diseased branches.
