Native British Trees

Here you can find the ever popular wild cherry, whitebeam, rowan, and silver birch as well as the larger english oak, beech, hornbeam, poplar, willow and scots pine.


ACER campestre

Field maple. Medium sized tree with yellow autumn colours.

ALNUS glutinosa

Common alder. Small to medium sized native tree often planted near water.

BETULA pendula

Silver birch. Medium sized native tree of graceful habit. White bark and small leaves. Always popular as a garden tree.

CARPINUS betulus

Common Hornbeam. Large native tree often used for hedging. Used also for pleaching, but perhaps 'Fastigiata' is a better option.

CRATEAGUS monogyna

Hawthorn. Small native tree most often associated with hedges.

FAGUS sylvatica

Common Beech. Large stately tree with coppery red autumn leaves. Does well on lime soils.

FRAXINUS excelsior

Common ash. Large native tree.

ILEX aquifolium

Common holly. Evergreen large shrub or small tree.

POPULUS nigra

Native black poplar. Large tree.

PRUNUS avium

Wild cherry. Medium sized native tree with white flowers in spring.

PRUNUS padus

Bird Cherry. Small, native tree with white flowers in spring

QUERCUS robur

English Oak. Large, long lived native tree. Supports a huge range of insects and associated wildlife, should be planted as often as possible, where space allows, though not really a garden tree.

SALIX alba

White willow. Fast growing native species.

SORBUS aria

Whitebeam, small to medium sized native tree, red berries. Good for exposed sites.

SORBUS aucuparia

Mountain Ash. Small native tree. Masses of red berries in the autumn

SORBUS torminalis

Wild Service Tree. Medium sized native tree with maple like leaves.

TILIA cordata
