  • Common name: Flowering Japanese apricot tree
  • Height and spread in 20 years: 2.5 x 2.5 meters
  • Seasons of interest: Spring, Autumn, Winter

A fantastic choice for an early flowering small garden tree. The carmine pink, almost red, single surprisingly tough flowers open earlier than most other Japanese flowering cherry trees in late February – March on bare branches. The flowers are almond scented and popular with wildlife. Mid green, glossy foliage boasts apricot-orange tints in a good autumn. The tree itself is slightly lollypop shaped, with a clear stem and somewhat rounded head of branches. Expect a height and spread of 2.5 x 2.5 meters in 20 years when planted in most but wet or shallow chalky soil. Beni-chidori is a beautiful small ornamental tree and is perfect for Japanese themed gardens and adding a bright burst of colour in the early grey of a new year. Beni Chidori make great trees for pots and look fabulous on patios and sheltered balconies.

The trees that are top grafted at 45cm have a total height of about 1m or perhaps a little more (50-60cm of clear stem plus foliage) and are ideal for flowers at head height if you are sitting on a patio). We sometimes also have a tree top grafted at 1m so that will not get much taller in total. The full height trees (1.5/2.0m) will grow taller, to about 2.5m.
